Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, fiends, and sinister influences expanding in power within the city.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Introduced

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to embark on their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table features Teor Pridesire (portrayed by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the start that keeping everyone at the same party would be impossible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Introduction, connecting the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might seem out of place, but the developments of the third episode make it clear why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

First, the party has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose death started the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and stealing all the powerful objects to sell off.

The antagonist then cleared his debts and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, north of the urban center, with Cyd close behind.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each member has a individual motive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and advises that it is a nasty environment.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having resisted his house’s orders to eliminate Teor and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could help the party enter areas they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character vowed a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now go with him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are hunted by the authorities that govern the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and Wicander betrayed the powerful family and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the participants to round up the Explorers and Schemers tables.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which characters will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
